System Requirements for Unix Installation

  • A computer or laptop with a minimum of 25GB of storage.
  • A USB drive (8GB as a minimum, 12GB or above recommended).

Downloading Ubuntu Image

An Ubuntu image is available for download here. Make sure to save it on your PC in a location you’ll remember! We’ll be using the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS edition for this guide.

Making a Bootable USB Drive

You must transfer your downloaded ISO to a USB stick to build the installation media for Ubuntu Desktop. This takes special software and is not the same as copying the ISO.

We’ll utilize balenaEtcher for this tutorial since it works with Linux, Windows, and Mac OS. Select the tool’s version, download it, then install it using your existing operating system.

We also offer guides for Rufus on Windows, Etcher on Mac OS, and Startup Disk Creator on Ubuntu if you’d rather use one of those programs instead.

To install your image, select your downloaded ISO, pick a USB flash drive, and then click Flash!

Boot from USB Drive

To boot or restart the laptop or PC you intend to use to install Ubuntu, insert the USB flash drive into it. The installation medium must be automatically recognized. If not, try pressing and holding F12 while the computer starts up and choosing the USB device from the system-specific boot menu.

The welcome page should now appear and invite you to either trial Ubuntu or install it.

Click Install Ubuntu to continue.

When prompted, choose your keyboard layout. Click Continue after selecting one.

Installation Setup

The Normal installation and Minimal installation options will then be presented to you. For people with smaller hard drives or who don’t need as many pre-installed programs, the minimum installation is helpful.

You will be prompted to download updates and third-party software (like Nvidia graphics drivers) that may enhance device support and performance in other options during the installation. Checking both of these items is advised.

You will be prompted to connect to the internet if you aren’t already at this stage. Make sure you can stay connected during the installation.

Drive Management

You can configure your installation using this screen. Choose Erase drive and install Ubuntu if you want Ubuntu to be the only operating system on your device.

Note: If another operating system is already installed on your device, you will be given the choice to install Ubuntu in addition to it rather than in place of it. This calls for some further actions that aren’t covered in this guide. However, this helpful explanation on Dave’s RoboShack has more information regarding configuring dual-booting.

Click Install Now and select Continue to confirm that you want to proceed with the installation without enabling encryption. If not, continue reading.

Enable Encryption (Optional)

Choose Advanced features > to encrypt your device if you choose to do so. Utilize LVM with the fresh installation of Ubuntu > For security, encrypt the newly installed Ubuntu.

Logical Volume Management is an acronym. It is simpler to build and manage partitions after installation by using LVM during setup.

Once you click Install Now, a security key creation screen will appear.

Note: If you decide to use encryption, it’s crucial that you keep track of your security key! It should be noted down and kept in a secure location away from your local network. Without it, you won’t be able to restore your data!

After confirming the modifications with Continue, click Install Now.

Select Location

On the map screen, choose your location and time zone, then click Continue. If you are online, this information will be discovered automatically.

Create Login Credentials

You’ll be asked to enter your name and the name of your machine as it will be seen on the network on this screen. You will then come up with a username and a secure password.

You can decide whether to require a password or to automatically log in. It is advised to disable automatic login if you plan to use your device while traveling.

Complete the Installation

Now relax and take in the slideshow as Ubuntu is being installed in the background.

You will be asked to restart your computer after the installation is finished.

To restart now, click.

You will be prompted to take your USB flash drive out of the computer when you resume. Press ENTER once you’ve finished this.

In the password field on the login screen (assuming you selected that option when creating your login credentials).

Welcome to your new Ubuntu Desktop! That’s all!

You can use the welcome widget to assist with a few more setup choices, such as:

  • The linking of your profile to several internet accounts.
  • Set up livepatch so that your device will automatically install updates (this option is only available when using a long-term support [lts] version of ubuntu).
  • Choose to allow canonical to collect device information (canonical doesn’t by default) in order to help develop ubuntu.
  • Launching location-based services.
  • More ubuntu software applications are being downloaded.

Update without fail!

Making ensuring your system is up to date is always a good idea, especially after a new installation.

The Software Updater app is the best way to accomplish this. The Software Updater will check for updates and apply them if you search for them in the app menu (the icon with 9 squares in the bottom corner of your window).

The terminal can be used to update Ubuntu as well.

In order to open the Terminal window, use CTRL+ALT+T. (or click the terminal icon in the sidebar).

Type in:

sudo apt update

Your login password must be entered when asked.

This will check for updates and notify you of any that require an application. Type: to make any modifications.

sudo apt upgrade

To complete the update process, enter Y and then hit ENTER to confirm
